Jeff Wolpert


As a multi-award winning producer, engineer, mixer, and educator Jeff Wolpert has worked with some of the biggest names in today’s music industry, alongside a successful career in film and television.

A graduate of Concordia University in Montreal (BFA Studio Music), Wolpert continued on to earn a Masters of Music Degree in Sound Recording (Tonmeister) from McGill University in 1982. Upon completion of his formal education he started work as a system technician and mixer at PA Plus in Toronto, joining Inception Sound shortly thereafter. During his 11 year stint there, he helped build the business from a one eight-track studio into two 48-track studios. He then became the chief engineer at McClear Digital Recording and Post Production Studios, a five-studio multi-format recording and mixing facility. He currently owns the largest commercial studio in Toronto – Kick Audio, as well as Desert Fish – his custom mixing facility.

Throughout Wolpert’s career, he has earned some of the most prestigious awards the industry has to offer; most recently, the Recording Engineer of the Year Juno Award for Holly Cole’s “Shade” in addition to two other nominations in this category. Also, Loreena McKennit’s albums “The Mask and Mirror” and “The Visit” both earned Wolpert 3M Visionary Awards alongside the co-producer award he received for “The Visit”.

Current nominations include the Gemini Award for Best Sound for Carol Welsman’s “Language of Love”, The Maple Leaf Blues Awards nomination for Producer of the Year for Carlos del Junco’s “Blues Mongrel”, and an Engineer of the Year Juno Award nomination for Manteca’s cutting-edge release “Onward”.

There are many outstanding works in Wolpert’s catalogue; The Cowboy Junkies’ last several releases including “Early 21st Century Blues”, Anne Murray’s “Duets: Friends and Legends” as well as “I’ll Be Seeing You”, Jimmy Webb’s “10 Easy Pieces”. He engineered and mixed the critically acclaimed platinum debut release for The Canadian Tenors. He also recorded, mixed and edited the soundtrack to “Blues Brothers 2000” for Paul Shaffer, and Aretha Franklin’s re-recording of “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” He recently completed Natalie MacMaster’s “In My Hands” featuring Allison Kraus, A Christmas CD from the Canadian Tenors featuring Sarah McLachlan, Kris Kristofferson’s “The Austin Sessions”; recorded The Misfits for George Romero’s film “Bruiser”, tracks for the Opening Ceremonies of the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and a new collection of songs by legendary songsmith Barry Mann.

Wolpert earned himself a 2010 Juno Classical Album of the Year by a Solo or Chamber Ensemble winner for – Joel Quarrington’s “Garden Scene”. Soon to be released is the documentary on theatre director Des McAnuff called A Life In Stages.

Versatile like no other, Wolpert’s exploits have ranged from recording at the renowned Mosfilm complex in Moscow to an expedition through the amphitheatres of the Mediterranean while carrying a complete 48 track recording system in two suitcases. This last voyage was documented in the October 2009 issue of MIX Magazine wherein Wolpert had just returned from a 2-week working trip to Havana, Cuba, having recorded 8 top artists, including Manolito Simonet.

Included in his film credits are: “American Psycho” (Mary Harron), “Being Julia” (Serendipity), “Cletis Tout” (Chris Veer Weil), “Bleacher Bums”, “Jerry and Tom”, and “Clubland” (Saul Rubinek), “Friday the 13TH“ parts 5 & 6 (Paramount), “Intimate Relations” (Fox Searchlight), “Jade” (Universal, Eugene O’Neil’s classic), “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (Rhombus and Jeremy Podeswa), and “Iron Road” (CCI Entertainment), amongst others.

Wolpert’s television credits are equally impressive, including such programs as: William Faulkner’s Emmy award-winning “Old Man”, “Beverly Hills 90210”, “Forever Knight”, “Friday The 13TH, the mini-series”, “Joan of Arc”, “The Audrey Hepburn Story”, and “Haven” which received an Emmy nomination for Best Dramatic Score. In 2007, he mixed the live music broadcasts for the Juno Awards and The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, garnering a Gemini nomination for Best Sound in a Comedy, Variety, Performing Arts Program or Series. Wolpert likewise mixed The Canadian Tenors live on The Dr. Phil Show and Oprah, with special guest, superstar Celine Dion.

Wolpert’s expert mixing ear has made its mark on 5.1 mixes for the “Long Journey Home” DVD by The Cowboy Junkies, the 6.1 mix for the “IMAX Space Station” movie, the EMI DVD disc “Lunch At Allan’s” featuring Ian Thomas, Mark Jordan, Cindy Church and Murray McLaughlin, the DVD-Audio version of Anne Murray’s “I’ll Be Seeing You”, the “No Journey’s End” and “Nights at the Alhambra” DVDs for Loreena McKennitt, the DVD of Peter Buffet’s “Spirit Seventh Fire”, and “Publicity Stunt” for hip-hop master K-OS. Soon to be released is the Surround Sound version of Amin Bhatia’s “Virtuality” and currently in production is Loreena McKennitt’s next DVD “A Movable Musical Feast”, the concert DVD of Lenny Solomon’s “Bowfire”, and a visual tribute to legendary fiddler Oliver Schroer.
