Doc McKinney

Meet Martin “Doc” McKinney – professionally referred to as Doc. He’s a creative architect who keeps one hand in development, while the other masterminds instruments, turns knobs and fine tunes the sounds of today’s brightest stars. He’s been involved in the music business since the age of 13, and is credited for having a hand in creating Esthero, RES, Santi White (Santigold) and K-os… amongst others. You can always count on Doc to bring a wealth of knowledge and an abundance of musical passion to the creative suite, both as a musician and producer.

Born in Canada and raised in Minneapolis, the ambitious mixed boy grew up in the heart of the Twin Cities’ eclectic indie scene and immersed in its ambiance. The infectious blend of pop, funk and rock, molded his love for hip hop and rock and harvested opportunities to play in various punk rock and hip hop based groups. The cities’ most influential contributions came out of the 80’s (note: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Husker Du, Prince), molding Doc’s versatility and garnering him sincere notoriety for his involvement in the scene.

Settling in Toronto in 1994 was the beginning of Doc’s path to success as a producer. After producing and developing many Toronto indie and urban artists, Doc was introduced to Jenny Bea Englishman – now known as “Esthero” – which led him to becoming one half of the then dynamic duo. The introduction, headed up by then EMI Publishing President, Michael McCarty, was a venture that would change the path of Doc’s future. After co-writing and producing their entire breakthrough album Breath From Another, Doc carefully transitioned Jenny-Bea into a solo act so he could return to his love for the studio. He followed up by dipping his hands deep into the development of the even more successful creation of RES – co-writing and producing her critically acclaimed smash album How I Do. It was this breakthrough release, which garnered the attention of critics worldwide and was the beginning of his creative relationship with Santi White (Santigold).

Since then, Doc’s production talents have graced the presence of Sting, Kelis, Dr. Dre, G-Love and Raphael Saadiq… and it doesn’t stop there. Mary J Blige, Sinead O’Conner, Alice Smith, Amanda Blank, Trouble Andrew, Ali Shaheed Muhammad(A Tribe Called Quest), Hawksley Workman as well as Latin Artist Belinda, RBD and Debi Nova have all had the opportunity to work with Doc.

Though an architect on the musical front, some say his true talent comes from the fact that he’s a dreamer. He understands the importance of development… and with that, comes an element of change. Put the two together – alongside a musical mastermind, and you’ve created a potion for success. His musical success is vivid proof of that…

When Doc’s not travelling extensively between New York, LA and Toronto, his work can regularly be heard in various hit film and Television shows such as Desperate Housewives, Diary of a Call Girl, The

Hills, Miss Congeniality, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Slam, Zero Effect, Smallville and John Tucker Must Die.

An avid supporter of War Child, GEM’s – Girl’s Education and Mentoring Services, and (working closely) Red Hot (Aid’s Awareness), Doc donates his work as a show of support. His other passion lies in the hearts of his children.

Currently, Doc is working on Jenna Andrews, Alice Smith, and RES’s sophomore album. Additionally, Doc is working on an EP Project with Ali Shaheed (entitled Doc and Ali), and is planning a solo project of his own.
